Veterans Burial Detail

The Lancaster Ohio Veterans Burial Detail is dedicated to providing military honors to all eligible veterans in Fairfield County, Ohio, and surrounding communities.  We are a non-profit volunteer organization headquartered at AmVets Post 1985 in Lancaster.

Upon request, our Detail performs military honors during the memorial service of a qualified veteran.  Our chaplain offers a short prayer to begin.  Then the firing squad conducts a three-shot volley in memory of the fallen, which consists of no less than three and no more than seven rifles.  Typically three fired cartridges are placed into the folded flag and presented to the next of kin.  These cartridges signify duty, honor, and sacrifice.

We are very fortunate to have two bugle players on the squad.  On the very rare occasion that neither bugler is available, an electronic ceremonial bugle is used. Our buglers play Taps--our National Song of Remembrance--to express the nation’s gratitude for a veteran’s service.

Next is a short ceremony during which the United States flag is folded into a triangle. The process involves 13 folds to represent the original colonies. Once the flag is properly folded, only the blue field and white stars are visible on the outside.

Our Commander presents the flag to the family to thank them on behalf of the military branch under which the veteran served, the President, and a grateful nation.

We are honored to provide this final expression of thanks to our departed veterans.
